Clinical Applications of Flowable Composite Resins: A Comprehensive Series

In this series of eight clinical articles entitled “Clinical Applications of Flowable Composite Resins: A Comprehensive Series” we will address the main clinical indications of flowable composite resins and their advantages. Some indications will be discussed in which flowable resins can be used as one of the steps in the restorative process, and others in which they can be used to make the entire restoration/indication.
The use of a proper flowable composite resin in dentistry offers several advantages that make it applicable in most clinical situations, with a notable absence of internal bubbles.
The high flowability material properties, ideal to function as a “liner” of the cavity, it creates an adhesive protective layer, thin and perfectly polymerized. The ability of this composite resin to adapt to the cavity base are superb. The film thickness should be as small as possible due to the excellent flowability, without losing physical properties.
It can be used as an adaptation material between two composite resin surfaces or between composite resin and on top of the adhesive layer working as an adhesive protection (ex. Class II restorations).

Outcome of the Filtek Bulk Fill Flowable after light curing. We can see a thin and uniform flowable composite layer cover all the adhesive in the internal walls of the cavity, promote an adhesive protection and avoid any internal air bubbles or unfilled spaces.

Conclusions

The use of the Filtek Bulk Fill Flowable in an “ADAPT” indication allow us to have:
Absence of internal bubbles: Flowable resin is known for its ability to flow and fill spaces uniformly, ensuring more aesthetic and long-lasting restorations without the formation of internal bubbles;
Precise adaptation: Its fluidity allows for precise adaptation to the areas that need restoration, ensuring a perfect fit and minimizing the need for post-operative adjustments.
Reduced post-operative sensitivity: Precise adaptation and the absence of internal bubbles minimize post-operative sensitivity, enhancing the patient’s comfort.
